SAINT-ESTÈPHE

Formerly called Saint-Estèphe Calon, this is the highest appellation in the Northern Medoc. The variety of the soil assures the individuality of this wine, which is distinguished by its robustness and richness in tannin.

The Grand Cru Classé such as Château Cos d’Estournel (a real architectural oasis with typical oriental influences) and the Châteaux of Calon Segur and Montrose stand out triumphantly from the fields of age-old vines. Mostly family-run, the chateaux from the appellation of Saint-Estephe provide not only a great diversity of wines at very affordable prices, but also a variety of blends due to the various types of soils.

Among the 60 Grand Cru Classé, Saint-Estephe hosts 5 of them. Some of the family-run & operated Chateaux such as Cos Labory and Chateau Lafon Rochet provide great wines at still affordable prices. Overlooking the Gironde estuary, Chateau Meyney, Chateau Phelan Segur, Chateau Capbern produce some of the nicest Saint-Estephe wines.
